Marine Bank & Trust Company is supporting the Harvest Food & Outreach Center's "Children's Read & Feed Program." During the summer months when the school lunch program is not available, many local children miss having a healthy breakfast and lunch. Further, the reading skills of these same children start to lapse during the summer, and by the time school starts in the fall, they have a difficult time getting back to the level they had achieved prior to summer vacation.
The Harvest Food & Outreach Center is trying to address these needs by collecting breakfast and lunch foods, and also books for children in all grade levels. The types of foods being collected include boxes of cereal, breakfast or cereal bars, crackers, fruit cups, fruit bars, fruit drinks, and peanut butter & jelly. Low fat or sugar-free food items are preferred. A large variety of children's and young adult books can be purchased for about twenty-five cents each at the Friends of the Library (next to Tasty-O donuts on 14th Avenue), and many stores have two-for-one sales on the snack foods. The items collected will be distributed throughout the summer.
